FAST FOR LIGHT — FASTING TOWARDS THE INNER LIGHT
When Simplicity Is the Highest Realm of Human Life
The Transnational Journey of Understanding and Compassion – Living in Harmony with Nature & Nurturing Compassion
Have you ever, amidst the clamor of the city or the tangled paths of life, paused for a single beat, placed your hand on your chest, and asked yourself: What truly matters most in this life? And what is genuinely essential for one’s own peace?
In our youth, we often step into life with very light hands. Yet the longer we journey, the more those hands try to grasp: a bit of status, a bit of wealth, relationships, or the external benchmarks set by the world. Then one day, we suddenly realize that what exhausts us most is not what we have yet to achieve, but the heavy burdens our minds stubbornly cling to. A room stuffed with too many objects becomes stifling; the human mind is no different. When cluttered with excessive worries, rivalries, and cravings, this vessel of body and form is left with not a single breath of space.
Simplicity, therefore, does not begin with how many external possessions we discard. True simplicity begins with an honest question deep within the heart: What is truly essential to my existence?
Those who do not yet understand life desire much. Those with growing understanding learn to discern. And those with deep insight know how to let go. By releasing unnecessary encumbrances, the mind does not become a vacuum; rather, a vast, boundless space opens up—allowing true peace a chance to enter. At that moment, we realize: Simplicity is not a lower realm of living, but the highest, sweetest fruit of a mindful journey.
On the path of practice and service, what Tuệ Đức has always deeply brooded over and regarded as the core essence and greatest life-vocation is the spirit of Fast for Light (Fast4Light) — Fasting towards the Inner Light.
Fast for Light is never an act of self-torture or a test of egoistic endurance. It is a “revolution of consciousness” designed to shatter every chain of greed and dependency on food. Eating less and speaking less lightens our karmic load. Right at our daily meal or in the alms bowl, when greed stills itself, the bodily vessel automatically activates its self-balancing and self-healing mechanisms (Autophagy), restoring the purest peace and vitality of nature. When the body is liberated from over-consumption, the subterranean currents of consciousness settle into stillness, and the noble upright spirit (Hạo nhiên chính khí) is ignited, helping us perceive a miraculous truth: We are not this physical vessel; we are the silent, luminous awareness operating this vessel.
Looking back at human history, the great Mahatma Gandhi — who underwent over 17 major fasts in his lifetime, with record stretches lasting up to 21 consecutive days sustained only by sips of water — encapsulated a profound wisdom regarding the true meaning of deliberate, mindful fasting:

“We have no right by fasts to convert people to our ideals. That would be a species of violence. But it is our duty to strengthen by our fasting those who hold the same ideals, but are likely to weaken under pressure.” — M.K. Gandhi
Rung Goi practices Fast for Light neither to compel nor to persuade the world to fast along with us. That has never been the guiding tenet of Rung Goi. This mindful practice is undertaken, first, to purify our own mind and consciousness, and second, to generate a sanctuary of peaceful energy, lending strength to Dear Friends who yearn for self-healing yet lack sufficient faith amidst life’s storms and pressures.

A Letter to Rung Goi Service Teams Worldwide and the Extended Family of Dear Friends,
From the sacred highlands of the Buddha’s land in Myanmar, Tuệ Đức sends wholesome blessings to every Dear Friend serving in Rung Goi and our interconnected family everywhere.
On this transnational Journey of Understanding and Compassion, Tuệ Đức vows to walk with a mind of radical letting go, blending completely with Mother Earth and experiencing liberation through rigorous ascetic precepts. Forsaking secure walls and enclosed shelters, Tuệ Đức resides entirely outside solid structures, using neither mosquito nets nor fixed tents. Resting places are simply empty sheds, beneath tree roots, in quiet forests, or burial grounds. When rainstorms arrive, a simple plastic poncho or small tarp is all that covers the body to fully experience the impermanence and boundless expanse of sky and earth.
Each day, Tuệ Đức eats and drinks only once, or practices controlled, mindful dry fasting. The absolute dry-fasting therapy within the 7T framework is a grand counter-current, freeing consciousness from dependency on coarse material needs. Along the alms-round, Tuệ Đức embraces every favorable condition with the spirit of “eat whatever is offered.” Yet when blessed with proactive vegetarian offerings, Tuệ Đức selects only pure plant-based nourishment. To diminish an act of appropriation or killing is to snap a binding thread of illness and karmic residue. Right upon a humble bowl of alms food, the boundless joy and equanimity of the 7T framework (Tin – Thức – Thực – Tập – Thiền – Thiên – Thương / Faith – Awareness – Nutrition – Discipline – Meditation – Nature – Compassion) shine forth resplendently.
May the energy of practice within the sacred forest be dedicated to the peace of all beings and the flourishing of all life!
Beloved Dear Friends,
To ensure that the Fast for Light journey and the cultivation of inner rectitude never veer into extremism or danger, Rung Goi always reminds one another to maintain the Middle Way. Life does not demand that we prove our mettle through extreme austerities exceeding the body’s safe limits, nor does it invite self-indulgence.
-
Tin (Faith): Clear, discerning trust;
-
Thức (Awareness): Listening to body and mind in every passing moment;
-
Thực (Nutrition): Nourishing oneself appropriately;
-
Tập (Discipline): Steadfast, unflagging practice;
-
Thiền (Meditation): Turning inward to observe; Be still and see/know;
-
Thiên (Nature): Harmonizing with natural laws; Going home to nature and let nature heal oneself;
-
Thương (Compassion): Unconditional love coupled with safe, lucid wisdom.
Ultimately, the highest realm of human life is not owning a life that draws everyone’s awe, but reaching a day when one can live a very ordinary life—yet within that ordinariness lies pristine peace: eating a simple meal with a heart full of gratitude, walking through a day without special achievements yet finding it worth living, and standing before impermanent fluctuations with a mind no longer resisting or fearing.
When demands and cravings gradually subside, we realize that life has provided us abundantly for a long time. We begin to truly return to the life present right before our eyes—where a breath enters, a breath departs, where nature quietly shelters us, and where our own mind possesses an infinite, unconditioned expanse of freedom.
Affectionately wishing all Dear Friends everywhere peaceful body and mind, clear wisdom, unwavering faith in your own self-healing capacity, and the daily sowing of wholesome seeds for yourselves, for others, and for all living beings!
